Applying Packaging Tape Correctly for Maximum Adhesion
We know that Packaging tape is great for sealing and adding strength to boxes, as well as stopping items from falling out. But did you know there are multiple types of tape out there, and that some are better suited to certain materials and package sizes than others? Did you also know that there are a few steps you can take beforehand to help make the application process more convenient and result in an even stronger seal? Let’s find out more about tape types and discuss a few application tips.
Variants of Packaging Tape
Sticky Tape
Sticky tape, such as Sellotape and Scotch tape, is a general-purpose, transparent, and adhesive tape commonly used for sealing small boxes. It’s extremely easy to use and best suited for light-duty sealing, but might not be suitable for heavy-duty use.Masking Tape
Designed for temporary adhesion, masking tape is often used in printing or labelling. It isn’t heavy-duty but is a great option if you want to create a seal that is easy to remove later.Duct Tape
Known for its durability, water resistance, and strength, duct tape is excellent for heavy-duty applications and uneven surfaces, making it useful in situations where Scotch Tape and Sellotape might not do the trick.Polypropylene Tape
This affordable tape is widely used for securing packages in shipping and storage, as its strong adhesive works well on cardboard and plastic, maintaining strength even in varying temperatures.Hot Melt Tape
This kind of tape also provides high-strength adhesion and is particularly effective for sealing heavy packages. It’s applied by using a dispenser that melts the adhesive, creating a durable bond.Water-Activated Tape
This type of tape sticks incredibly well to cardboard surfaces. It works by wetting the adhesive side before placing it on the packaging.Preparing for the Adhesion
Whilst applying packaging tape is simple enough, there are a few steps you can take beforehand to help it adhere better and remain in place for longer. You can make the process more convenient as well!- Assess the Surface
